Deciding how to heat our homes for the winter months involves some important decisions. In the year 2020 we have come a long way from the days of heating our homes as best as possible with a wood burning fireplace or wood burning cast iron stove. The year 2020 provides many different options and it is important for homeowners to take into consideration the benefits and drawbacks of all options.

In recent years the two main sources for heat have been gas and oil fired boilers that provide heat through hot water systems with baseboard or steam systems with radiators. Popular belief has been to switch over from oil to gas as a heat source to save money however with the low cost of oil in recent years it may take a while to see the savings. Deciding to bring gas into your home may also be a personal preference if you like to cook with a flame versus an electric stove top.

If you are living in a home that is using oil as a heat source and you would like to upgrade cooling your home a ductless split unit may be an option. These units have options for heating and cooling. The efficiency of these units allows you to warm your home during moderately cold months without using your main heat source.

Enhancements in technology have provided other options as well with high efficiency boilers becoming a popular option. These units save space and dollars with a compact design that maximizes efficiency. As we all know heat rises so radiant heat has become a popular option in new construction and remodels. Geothermal heat pumps are available that will use warmer underground temperatures than the current air temperature to generate heat for your home. Solar heat is also available in homes that have enough good exposure to sunlight.

Please do not forget to assess how well insulated your home might be. A high efficiency heating system will not be effective without proper insulation. Refer to the image and make sure you review these areas in your home for proper insulation.

Reviewing all of the possible options and determining the best possible option for your home is very important. If you would like an expert opinion please let us know and we can set you up with a professional that will help you make the best decision possible.
